Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and punished "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The clip, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in military or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all took an vow to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to reject improper directives. No one has to follow orders that break the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he wrote: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, House Democratic leader released a unified announcement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in America," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our nation with tremendous loyalty and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these extreme social media posts and recant his violent language before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an oath to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our military rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can cause confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
