Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted the economist's determination to depart.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on this week to pass a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for approval. Trump has said he intends to endorse the legislation, after modifying his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the Congressional committee last week referenced numerous high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to link the official to influential world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, Summers said he took "full responsibility for my misguided decision to maintain interacting with the financier".
He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led the institution from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public duties previously on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the group.
Summers entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
