A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and a third person who escaped following the explosion was found shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
