Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.

"The future will decide," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the current federal leadership, using his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and warned eliminating the authority to grant CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160m from the state," he said, in the wake of a this week's tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously announced he was blocking $40m from the state for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration said in a previous release addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
