Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
