Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza CEO Steps Down Following Shift Into Chicken.
The head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the UK might have reached peak pizza while expanding the company into poultry items has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.
Executive Change
Andrew Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for over 20 years, had aimed to pivot the UK's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards chicken offerings, commenting in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said chicken was the quickest rising protein in the world.
Board Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
New Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain unveiled its poultry brand – which Rennie described as a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.
While the business is still planning to expand it across its extensive network in 2026 as scheduled, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Comment
Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to drive further growth and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are prioritizing finding the right chief executive to lead the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Market Difficulties
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions declined by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In August, it warned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.
Competitors are also struggling. Another major chain announced the closing of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its British operations entered insolvency.
Health Efforts
Responding to consumer trends towards healthier eating, the company has rolled out lower-calorie options, such as its Thin & Crispy range of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has over 2,100, while a individual has 909 calories.
Acting Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the betting firm a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the top job long-term.
She said: “Our team has a number of active expansion and operational projects that we will be concentrating on implementing at a rapid rate.”
She added these included additional efforts on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also in need of a permanent chief financial officer until March 16, when Andrea joins from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow acts as acting financial officer.
