The Heartbreaking Transformation a Single Year Has Caused in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was completely distinct. Before the American presidential vote, reflective Americans could admit America's deep flaws – its inequities and disparity – however they continued to perceive it as the United States. A free society. A place where the rule of law held significance. A country headed by a dignified and ethical official, even with his advanced age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the country we live in. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into vehicles, sometimes denied due process. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for a grotesque event space. The president is harassing his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are dispatched across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the War Department, has practically freed itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, legal practices, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility.

“The US, shortly prior to its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the limit into authoritarianism and fascism,” Garrett Graff, stated this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I thought feasible, it transpired in this country.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it occurred.

Yet, we understand that the president was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and despite the warnings that came with the knowledge of Project 2025 – despite the president personally declared plainly he planned to be a dictator only on the first day – sufficient voters chose him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the current reality are, it's more daunting to understand that we’re only several months under this leadership. How will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And if the three years transforms into something even longer, because there is not anyone to stop this ruler from determining that another term is essential, maybe for security concerns?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There are midterm elections the coming year that could create a new governmental control, in case Democrats retake either chamber of Congress. There exist government representatives who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, such as lawmakers currently initiating an inquiry into the attempted fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in the next cycle could start our journey to recovery just as the prior selection placed us on this regrettable path.

There are millions of Americans protesting in the streets across municipalities, similar to recent recently during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare in the 1950s or amid the Vietnam war protests or during the Watergate scandal.

In those instances, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

Reich says he recognizes the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring now. For proof, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition against a television host's removal and the largely united defiance by media to accept government requirements they only publish authorized information.

“The sleeping giant consistently stays asleep till certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so disrespectful of the common good, certain violence so disruptive, that the giant is forced other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

At the same time, the big questions endure: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My pessimistic brain suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything could be lost. My hopeful heart, however, advises me that we need to strive, by any means available.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it may be working on election efforts, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to safeguard electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we were in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or in several years? The reality is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to not give up.

What’s Giving Me Hope Now

The interaction I experience during teaching with aspiring reporters, who are equally idealistic and grounded, {always
